Performance guarantees for scheduling algorithms under perturbed machine speeds

چکیده
We study two local search algorithms and a greedy algorithm for scheduling. The worstcase performance guarantees are well-known but seem to be contrived and too pessimistic for practical applications. For unrestrictedmachines, Brunsch et al. (2013) showed that the worst-case performance guarantees of these algorithms are not robust if the job sizes are subject to random noise. However, in the case of restricted related machines the worstcase bounds turned out to be robust even in the presence of random noise. We show that if themachine speeds rather than the job sizes are perturbed, one obtains smaller bounds for the performance guarantees also for restricted machines thus yielding a stronger result. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Efficient Algorithms for Just-In-Time Scheduling on a Batch Processing Machine
Just-in-time scheduling problem on a single batch processing machine is investigated in this research. Batch processing machines can process more than one job simultaneously and are widely used in semi-conductor industries. Due to the requirements of just-in-time strategy, minimization of total earliness and tardiness penalties is considered as the criterion. It is an acceptable criterion for b...
متن کاملModels and Algorithms for Stochastic Online Scheduling
We consider a model for scheduling under uncertainty. In this model, we combine the main characteristics of online and stochastic scheduling in a simple and natural way. Job processing times are assumed to be stochastic, but in contrast to traditional stochastic scheduling models, we assume that jobs arrive online, and there is no knowledge about the jobs that will arrive in the future. The mod...
متن کاملGENETIC AND TABU SEARCH ALGORITHMS FOR THE SINGLE MACHINE SCHEDULING PROBLEM WITH SEQUENCE-DEPENDENT SET-UP TIMES AND DETERIORATING JOBS
This paper introduces the effects of job deterioration and sequence dependent set- up time in a single machine scheduling problem. The considered optimization criterion is the minimization of the makespan (Cmax). For this purpose, after formulating the mathematical model, genetic and tabu search algorithms were developed for the problem. Since population diversity is a very important issue in ...
متن کاملOptimality of the flexible job shop scheduling system based on Gravitational Search Algorithm
The Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) is one of the most general and difficult of all traditional scheduling problems. The Flexible Job Shop Problem (FJSP) is an extension of the classical job shop scheduling problem which allows an operation to be processed by any machine from a given set. The problem is to assign each operation to a machine and to order the operations on the machine...
متن کاملInvestigation of the two-machine flow shop scheduling problem to minimize total energy costs with time-dependent energy prices
In this paper, the problem of two-machine flow shop scheduling to minimize total energy costs under time-of-use tariffs is investigated. As the objective function of this study is not a regular measure, allowing intentional idle-time can be advantageous. So this study considers two approaches, one for non-delay version of the problem and the other one for a situation when inserting intentional ...
